Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines act on the brain and central nervous system to produce a calming effect.
Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression. It is the single most prescribed psychiatric medication in the United States.
If Xanax isn’t your thing then Activan (Lorazepam), Valium (Diazepam) are also great.
How to use Xanax?
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor.
Dosage is based on your medical condition, age, and response to treatment.
Your dose may be gradually increased until the drug starts working well.
Follow your doctor’s instructions closely to reduce the risk of side effects.
Note: This medication may sometimes cause addiction.
Xanax dosing information
For anxiety Disorders
Patients with anxiety disorder who are receiving Xanax for the first time should start with a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg given three times daily. The dose may be increased to achieve a maximum therapeutic effect, at intervals of 3 to 4 days, to a maximum daily dose of 4 mg, given in divided doses.
4 mg daily, although some patients may need more.
Important information before using this medications
DO NOT use Xanax if you are allergic to it or similar medication, like chlordiazepoxide (Librium), clonazepam (Klonopin), clorazepate (Tranxene), diazepam (Valium), flurazepam (Dalmane), and others. lorazepam (Ativan), or oxazepam (Serax).
DO NOT use Xanax if you have narrow-angle glaucoma.
DO NOT use Xanax if you are pregnant. This medicine may cause birth defects or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in a newborn. Inform your doctor if you are planning to have a child, or if you become pregnant while you are taking this medication or if you are breast-feeding.
An abrupt stop in the consumption of Xanax or decrease the dose without consulting your doctor may cause withdrawal symptoms.
Xanax side effects
Common side effects may include:
drowsiness, feeling tired;
slurred speech, lack of balance or coordination;
Call your doctor at once if you experience or have:
depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself
confusion, agitation, hostility, hallucinations
increased energy, unusual risk-taking behavior
uncontrolled muscle movements, seizure (convulsions) tremor
fluttering in your chest or pounding heartbeats.
